Thanksgiving this year was perfect.
This year was the first Thanksgiving in about 5 years that I did not have to work. I forgot how nice it is not to work on a holiday. I work more major holidays than I’m off and because I work on Sundays, that also means I work holidays that always fall on a Sunday like Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.
I started the morning around 7 a.m. and turned on the Today show while putting a breakfast casserole that I made the night before into the oven. Cozy in my robe and pajamas and slippers while walking around the house doing some small chores before settling on the couch to do my devotions.
By the time the Thanksgiving parade started, the casserole was finished and served up on two plates, and coffee mugs were filled to the brim. David and I sat on the couch and leisurely enjoyed our breakfast and watched the parade.
I put my hair up in rollers before making my way to the kitchen to finish up some cooking. This year, I made macaroni and cheese, sweet potato casserole, sourdough rolls, corn, sausage balls, pecan pie, and an apple cider punch. I did a lot of prep on Wednesday, so thankfully on Thursday morning, it was smooth sailing.
When the parade ended, we got ready, loaded up the car with all of the food, and made our way to my Mom’s house, which is thankfully just a five-minute drive. I am so blessed to live so close to my family and David’s family!
Once at my Mom’s, I got to work helping her finish up some last-minute tasks and set out all the food with my sister, her fiance, one of my brothers, his girlfriend, and our cousin. David carved the turkey. He also carved a smaller turkey that I made at our home the night before for our own mini-Thanksgiving dinner just us two. My mom had everything decorated so beautifully and put so much work into Thanksgiving, as she does every year.
We had a packed house with my mom, siblings, significant others, my youngest cousin, my dad and his wife, David’s parents and youngest sister, and friends who popped by. We ate around 2 p.m. and David and I were the last to leave, staying until about 10 p.m.
It was a wonderful day and even though holidays can be tough now that my Nana is in Heaven, I always feel her with us and am reminded of how lucky I am to have been her granddaughter. I am thankful to live a life so filled with love.
